Applications of Holey Fibre: Splicing, Spot-size conversion and Coupling
This thesis investigates properties and applications of Holey Fibre (HF), a recent innovation in the field of optical waveguiding. HF is an all-silica optical fibre with a solid core surrounded by an array of air holes that provide a low-index cladding. The strong guidance of HF and the numerous degrees of freedom available in design give rise to novel properties, including the capability of si...
متن کاملSingle-mode fiber microlens with controllable spot size.
A novel method for fabricating microlenses on tapered single-mode fibers is shown to be able to control the lens spot size. The fiber cladding is first symmetrically tapered by etching it with an evaporating ammonium bifluoride solution. A hemispheric lens is then melted on the taper tip with a CO(2) laser. The lens can reduce the fiber mode radius to 40% of its original value. A theoretical ca...
متن کاملOn-chip optical mode conversion based on dynamic grating in photonic-phononic hybrid waveguide
We present a scheme for reversible and tunable on-chip optical mode conversion based on dynamic grating in a hybrid photonic-phononic waveguide. The dynamic grating is built up through the acousto-optic effect and the theoretical model of the optical mode conversion is developed by considering the geometrical deformation and refractive index change. Three kinds of mode conversions are able to b...

متن کاملOn-chip Hot Spot Remediation with Miniaturized Thermoelectric Coolers
The rapid emergence of nanoelectronics, with the consequent rise in transistor density and switching speed, has led to a steep increase in chip heat flux and growing concern over the emergence of onchip “hot spots” in microprocessors, along with such high flux regions in power electronic chips and LED’s. Miniaturized thermoelectric coolers (μ-TEC’s) are a most promising cooling technique for th...
